Today was not my day.

Started with waking up late, being late to the doctors office, finding that appointments WERE really needed, getting into an accident with a deaf lady, who decided that she didn't want to stay, chasing her for a few miles to catch up, getting a stinky rental car, going to the gym to find that its closed, and ending with my food being missing on the delivery order. I'm waiting for the clock to reach midnight.

My friend Ilan had once mentioned that he didn't care much for landscapes, because they can get cliched and boring - I can see how that could be - in fact, while I was taking the picture above in Sheffield, England, somebody asked (in a mocking tone) exactly what I found about landscapes interesting. I thought about it and I realized that personally for me, I just like being part of beautiful landscapes. Being there is enough, to be able to capture it no matter how many have done it before me, is an enjoyable experience. Bringing the image home completes that experience.

It got me thinking about media genres in general. It seems certain genres in photography (and movies, etc) tend to gain more attention than others. These genres are more on the serious side, showing problems and areas where we have work to do. Its probably why comedies have never won Oscars, and photographs about impoverished third world countries seem to win all the awards. I understand it to some extent; my personal favourite genre of photography is documentary photography, and ideally, I would like to use it to make people aware of things they should be aware of. Unfortunately, these things don't include comedies (in movies) and landscapes (in photography). Another one of my personal photography related philosphy is that photography should evoke emotions. So, then does that emotion always need to be the one of drama? Why is it that we are not equally moved by a funny picture as opposed to a serious one? Drama vs comedy - do they evoke equally extreme emotions? If so, why do media with only dramatic subjects win all the accolades? What do you think?

  • Emotions can be invoked even by the most cliche photos of all - Much depends on the viewer and his own personal experience.
So now it's only a matter of 'numbers' - How MANY people are moved by your photo. On the other hand, those who win awards are those who capture a moment or have an impact. Funny photo/movie will always lose to a War movie or documentary because there is a priority of importance and impact.

Take your life as example. Funny situation will make you laugh for few minutes and improve your day. Maybe two days. Dramatic occurrence might change your life.
    Ilan @ Wednesday, November 4th, 2009
  • @Ilan: ahh, that is exactly my point. Its pretty understandable that subjects like death, war, hunger and famine have a greater priority than a funny moment, or a humorous picture. More people are definitely more moved by the prior than the latter. But - SHOULD they be? No doubt, somebody's lesser fortunate life is more important than any funny moment, but isn't there more people that can relate to a funny moment than a kid dying of hunger? I personally am more moved by the latter as well, but I have to ask myself - why? The funny/good time are much more positive to think about (IMHO).
Taking my life as an example, my father dying was definitely a monumental event for me, and it has changed me in ways I can't comprehend, but its not something I remember everyday - rather, I remember the good times and funny times I had when he was alive - which incidently, I remembered even before he passed away. Its a conflict in the mind, I imagine, but I am curious as to what other people think.
    Mickey @ Wednesday, November 4th, 2009
  • This is a stunning shot Mickey, and one could say it is full of drama due the colour of the sky and saturated colours and strong composition.

I enjoyed reading the conversation between you and Ilan, and with excellent points as to what is deemed more important. I guess it all comes down to priority, but regardless of what the media tells you, it's personal priority when it comes to how it makes one feel inside. I believe that no one (media especially) can dictate which is most important to any one of us.

This image would have looked and felt completely different had it been taken on a sunny bright day, but nonetheless, because of your composition, I feel it would have impacted this viewer equally.

    Just my 2 cents :)
    bluechameleon @ Wednesday, November 4th, 2009
  • This is an awesome shot. Pretty nice lights in this picture, looks more like a painting than a photo.
    Omar @ Wednesday, November 4th, 2009
  • This is an interesting debate because I have always been more moved by "dark" photography rather than the jovial. But when the two have been fused together – a dark comedy if you will – I feel like such is my life.

I guess as humans, we are moved by that which may harm us, or change us, because it's these things that make us grow. Like when I look at this photo, the first feeling I got was an ominous one, perhaps I need to prepare the house for the oncoming tornado. That is a bit dramatic, but that is the emotion is ensues. When I see a happy photo I just smile and want to emulate it. There's no change. It's like there's this inherent gene in people that makes them reactive to plight, destruction, dilemma, etc. We may not always be thinking of the life-changing experiences, but they are perpetually resonating in us. This is why we feel the emotions we feel, or make decisions we make... I think that this is what makes us human, and even what makes life interesting.

Btw, great photo. I'm an aspiring documentarian; I think you've captured this scene in a way that truly engages the viewer. I feel like I'm there, or like I should run for cover.
    jess @ Thursday, November 5th, 2009
  • I personally love this image and I do enjoy landscape themes. I understand what you have written and the conversation between yourself and Ilan, but...I feel one should express themselves through their images as if they were telling their OWN story, not one that is out to win a prize.

I am not one to debate photography. I am not one to say there in any ONE way or the others. Personally, if I see a photo that might not be what I consider my "taste" in an image, I usually don't comment at all rather than voicing the WHY of WHY the image should not have been posted.

With all this being said, I love this image.
